How Two-Person Field Production Teams Are Changing the Way We Tell Stories

In the world of video production and filmmaking, job titles and roles are often used interchangeably. It can sometimes be confusing - even for people inside the industry - to clearly define what each person does on location. That’s where we come in.

We specialize in field production and documentary filmmaking - a model built around agility, skill, and adaptability.

Thanks to major advancements in technology, cameras today are not only smaller and more lightweight; they’re also incredibly powerful. We shoot with the Sony FX3 and FX30, paired with 24-bit audio recording, giving us high-fidelity sound without needing a separate sound operator. Compared to older field production setups that required larger, heavier cameras and more specialized equipment, today’s technology allows for greater mobility and flexibility - without sacrificing professional quality. This mobility is a major advantage, allowing us to work discreetly and capture more authentic moments.

In the past, field productions often required a larger crew: a camera operator, a sound mixer, a lighting assistant, a field producer, and sometimes more. When we explain to clients that we are the full field production and documentary team, we sometimes get curious looks - but that's because it’s a new model (one we may have even coined ourselves!). We’ve spent years honing our craft across all phases of production - pre-production, production, and post-production - making us an ideal solution for NGOs, foundations, news organizations, and media outlets seeking high-quality, cost-effective storytelling.

Of course, full production teams are still essential for large-scale shoots. But for documentary-style filming, on-location interviews, impact storytelling, and news features, a highly skilled two-person team can offer the same quality and depth - with the speed, efficiency, and unobtrusive presence today’s productions demand.

Another important part of how we work: when filming internationally, we make every effort to hire local crew whenever possible. This not only supports the local economy and community but also helps us navigate locations more easily - and work more respectfully within different cultures and languages.

So, the next time you’re considering who to hire for your documentary shoot or similar project, keep in mind the field production teams who are forging the way in the field - offering high-quality, flexible, and cost-effective solutions.
