The animal kingdom is powerful but it's also raw and unforgiving.

Our guide explained that these two male lions are brothers who had been fighting over a female in the pride. The injured lion is actually the alpha, but this clash may have changed the pride’s hierarchy.

Male lions within the same coalition-often brothers-will work together to control a pride, but when it comes to mating rights, competition can turn violent. Serious injuries like these can shift dominance, especially if the alpha is weakened for long enough.

Despite his wounds, the alpha is expected to recover. Injured males often retreat to rest and heal. If he can regain strength, he may reassert his place or eventually leave in search of a new pride-a behavior not uncommon among displaced or aging males.

Filming moments like this isn't easy. There's a discomfort that comes with seeing real pain and power at the same time. But as with all storytelling, it's important to capture and share what’s true, not just what’s beautiful.

::Storytime:: We sometimes leave our equipment nearby but within the kids' sight, as they enjoy looking at it. They are incredibly well-behaved if we ask them not to touch anything. However, if you tell them they can have a turn with something fairly unbreakable, such as the tripod or the boom pole, it will end up in pieces or in their mouths 😅

This is our second time filming with the kids at KCH, coming back was like coming back to over 100 old friends and it was incredible. When we are here all the children and staff work really hard to help us capture everything we set out to. But we also like to bring fun surprises and activities to do with them. Connecting with these kids means so much to us and judging from when we have to leave we think it means a lot to them as well 🥲

Behind the scenes. Filming a cinematic short in Kenya 🇰🇪

Storytime: While we were filming in Kenya, we planned to create a short cinematic film where a father figure gives advice to a child moving on to the next stages of life. Our goal was to give confidence to any child or young adult who looks to the home's staff for guidance through important stages in their lives. We wrote the script alongside our father figure to ensure the authenticity of the advice given. We planned the entire shoot and finalized the script about an hour before filming. Both our father figure and the younger child were very professional to work with. We can't wait to share the final video in a few weeks!

Do you hear the whistles in the background? Each of the younger kids received a whistle the evening before in a gift bag. They LOVED them.
